This Saturday the sporty spotlight shines bright on twenty-two year old kayaker and skydiver, Samantha Brunner. Check out Samantha’s interview below where she shares what it’s like to compete in kayaking, how she balances school and sports, and much, much more.

High School/Middle School/College: I am currently a student on full scholarship at the University of Memphis. I graduate in May with a bachelors in Exercise Sport Science, then its off to Physical Therapy school

How many years have you been kayaking? I have been paddling for about 6 years.

What was your fave sporty moment or memory?

The first time I ran a creek that I had to fully memorize. The small creek was so consistent that I had to remember all of the lines because there was no time to stop in between rapids. This made me learn to trust and rely on myself.

What was the biggest lesson you’ve learned from playing your sport?

To trust myself. Kayaking, for me, is all about pushing your physical and mental limits and learning to trust yourself. Only you can truly know what you are capable of, nobody else can tell you that. Kayaking is a way in which I learn what I am capable of; it helps me become a more independent person and puts a lot of life’s experiences into perspective.

What lessons have you learned about work ethic from your sport?

Always be a team player. Getting down the river is a group effort. Your friends depend on you to know your skills as much as you depend on them to know theirs. Also, to always be respectful and truthful. Also, kayaking is a pretty poor sport, so you have to learn how to work to make the bigger trips worthwhile and how to do them within a budget. With that being said, I have learned to be able to put a lot of work and preparation into my trips to make them work and be beneficial for both my sponsors and myself.

What have you learned about teamwork?

It is the only way to be successful, you can’t do everything all by yourself. Everyone has something to bring to the table and is better at something than you are. It teaches you when to lead and when to listen.

How do you balance school and sports?

Haha, that’s the hard one. I know that school is more important and I have the rest of my life to kayak. Being in Memphis makes me a weekend warrior when it comes to kayaking. I plan my major trips around my breaks in school.

How do you plan to use your sport to influence others?

When I get out of Physical Therapy school I plan to start a non-profit, whitewater kayaking camp to fight childhood obesity and eating disorders. I find that kayaking is not only enjoyable; it can be a great motivator to get into shape. I want to show how fun kayaking can be and I think that when one is having fun it is easier to be motivated to stay active.

What’s the girliest thing you like to do? (Pretty Tough signature question)

Haha, I think it would be to dress up. So much of what I do requires pants and flats or sneakers (not that I’m complaining) so when I have a chance to have a date night with my boyfriend, which comes once every few months haha, I like to dress up. I’m usually “one of the guys” so this helps remind me that I’m not always. Also, I kayak in waterproof mascara which makes me pretty girlie ;)

I Love You, Grease 2

The other night I caught my all-time fave childhood movie on VH1. Nope, it wasn’t ROGER RABBIT, a Disney princess movie, SUPERMAN, GREASE or even PRETTY IN PINK.

It was… GREASE 2.

At five-years-old I wanted to be Stephanie Zione. I even bought big hoop earrings (clip-ons), cut bangs, begged my mom to make me a Pink Ladies reversible black leather jacket, sang and danced to Cool Rider (I was real bad), and chomped on Bubba Hubba bubblegum like a cow chewing grass. While Sandy from the original GREASE was quiet and nice and girly (except at the end), Stephanie had edge. Stephanie had attitude. Stephanie liked motorcycles, being on the back of one, and bad boys who rode them.

Yes, my parents were worried about me.

And to this day every time I watch GREASE 2, I fall in love with it all over again.

Stephanie, I still heart you.

Never give up! And once that gate goes down keep it pedaling!

When you’re all together we all equal as one person. Nothing will be able to happen if one person doesn’t get along with someone else.

How do you balance school and sports?

My dad makes me finish all my homework before I can go anywhere or do anything!

What’s your fave sport?

Everything! My favorite sports to cover as a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) for the past decade and more have been BMX (freestyle & Racing), Skateboard, Motocross (FMX & Racing), Snowboard, Skiing (Freestyle), Taekwondo, MMA, & Cheerleading ...you know very similar sports! I tend to drift towards the non-traditional sports with more adrenaline these days although I have worked and loved everything from football, basketball, baseball, soccer, & track among many other of the more traditional sports.

How many years have you been playing your fave sport?

I have been an ATC for over 20 years and see no signs of slowing down yet; in fact I thinking I am working more now than I did even 10 years ago.

What was your fave sporty moment or memory?

My favorite moments come after I have helped an athlete return from an injury, especially injuries that could have been detrimental to their sporting careers (or that thought were career ending), climb up on the podium. Just seeing them reach their dreams are the best moments of all, and I have many from pee wees to high school, to college to Olympic to Pro, and they all mean a lot to me! It is especially cool when that athlete steps down off of the podium and hands me their flowers in thanks for helping them get there, or after their sporting career they return to school to become an ATC themselves!

What was the biggest lesson you’ve learned from playing your sport?

Patience and persistence no matter how frustrating things gets...and always look ahead with a glass half-full mentality no matter what!

What lessons have you learned about work ethic from your sport?

Same...patience & persistence win the game even when people try to knock you out, and always have a glass half-full...and always, always, always respect everyone no matter who they are.

What have you learned about teamwork?

Teamwork is amazing! Things get done so much better and quicker when you work together and let others help you...everyone can contribute to make it all happen. When someone thinks they are all that is needed that is when things go terribly wrong.

How do you balance school and sports?

For me it is balancing motherhood and sport coverage, and as a single mom that can be rough, but my daughter travels with me to whatever sporting event I am working and she gets to meet some really incredible people...some day I will tell her how famous the athletes she hangs out with were! I have to keep things in perspective, family is always first for me, although I have many sons and daughters out there, just come to an event and you will hear them scream MOM!! Love it! But I have learned over the years that I have to make time for me as well as for family, friends and my athletes, otherwise I go crazy. Since I love my work this is very often a hard concept for me to remember. School, research, and writing take a back seat but somehow seem to get done.

List some awards or accolades you’ve received.

NATA Service Award given to a select few ATC's each year who have volunteered and given back to sport and community over a period of 15 years or more; NCA Trainer of the year for the past 12 years; I have been priviledged to have worked some really cool events from World Cups, to World Championships to Olympics, to Dew Tour & Winter Dew, to local and state events in just about every sport, but the greatest award/reward I have received are the thank-you's I get from my highly appreciative athletes every day.

Who’s your fave athlete, both male and female?

Hmmm, rough question there are so many! I think Donna Vano (snow & skate) would have to be one of my all-time favorite females, but so is Diana Lopez & Kay Poe (TKD) and so many more that I have worked with over the years...as for the guys wow I work with so many incredible people who are also amazing athletes, including Daniel Dhers, Chad Kagy, James Foster, Drew Bezanson, Brandon Dosch, Anthony Napolitan (BMX), Austen Seaholm, Ryan Sheckler, Christian Sereika (SKB), Steven Lopez, Jason Neville, Josh Coleman (TKD).....I could go on for days!

Tell us about your profession.

Athletic Training for me is a way to still be a part of sports I love, especially action & extreme sports, where what I do can mean the difference between being able to compete or not. I can honestly say I love what I do. I get to go to work everyday and simply watch some tremendously talented athletes play the sports they love, and in the process meet some pretty awesome individuals. I give them the added support for development and care of their mind and body that often helps them reach their highest dreams

Why did you choose this profession?

I knew I wanted to be in the medical field, originally thought I wanted to be a surgeon but also wanted to be there when the injury happened all the way until the athlete returned to full participation in the sport they loved, so it had to be Sports Medicine, and I kind of fell into Athletic Training as a means to be there, and not just the office, but actually working on-stie with athletes. When I first joined this profession I was told girls would never do well and to make sure I had a "back-up" profession, which only made me want to prove them wrong, so I set on a path to work to the highest level of sport and hopefully make a difference in athlete's lives, as well as hopefully open the door for other girls who wanted to do the same. If it were up to me I would work for free for all the sports and athletes who appreciate the care I provide if only I had no bills or at least more sponsors that reduced that burden since so many athletes I work with do not have health insurance, so they often go without care unless it is free.

What kind of schooling did you have to complete?

You only have to have a bachelor's degree in Athletic Training/Sports Medicine but I went onto get my Master's and trying to finish up a PhD so that there are never any excuses from my education not being high enough to be hired. When I sat for my Board Exams you also had to have completed 1800 hours of practical work with athletes, after working with over 50,000 athletes during my career I have lost track of how many hours I have put in to this point!

What’s your day like?

Depending on if I am at an event or just checking on the athletes while they are training, I have to be prepared to handle any kind of injury that can happen at anytime, and of course I tend to work those sports which have a greater chance of serious injury even in training. Event coverage usually is anywhere from 10-14 hours/day, while training is generally less than 6 hours of work. I also have to spend time on the computer and phone trying to get events to work, staff to cover the events, supplies for the events, and sponsors and/or donations to cover the cost of traveling to and covering events as most of the sports I cover have little to know budget for medical care among athletes who probably need it the most. I work anything from charity events to help support a local skatepark all the way up to highly televised events, and love caring for all the athletes no matter what age or ability level, they all have their own place in the sporting world.

I loooooove pedicures! And since I wear flip-flops or sandals anytime I am not working the toes have to look good!

Yay, 2010! Doesn’t feel amazing to begin a new year? I feel refreshed, refocused, and renewed.

Visions of Revisions Dance in my Head

Here’s what I’ll be doing during the holiday break…

I'll be working on revisions for Pretty Tough Book 3 in between eating a ton of cookies and hanging out with family and friends. Total bliss. :)

And although I didn’t blog about it much, 2009 was a year of extremes. Extreme sadness and extreme happiness.

It takes a lot of discipline and hard work, and your sport has to be something you are willing to do, and just something you live for.

Train as hard as you can and make certain days where it is all about motocross, and just be the best you can be at all times you are on the bike.

School is number 1, to balance both I just think I can't ride or anything unless I do well at school.

What’s your fave sport?

Motocross is definitely my favorite sport for sure! Hands down! Haha.

How many years have you been racing?

Well, I have been riding for 8 years now but, I’ve only been racing competitively for 6 years and I love it!

What was your fave sporty moment or memory?

My favorite memory that I have from racing would be the year that I won 1st place for the first time. It was a year after I had began racing hill climbs, I was only 13 years old and even though I there were only three girls in the class I was competing in, I was the only one to actually make it over the hill, giving me 1st overall. So it was a very exciting moment for me and I will never forget it!

What was the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your sport?

The biggest lesson I have learned from my sport would be that you must always have a positive attitude no matter what. It’s a MUST, to be confident in yourself whenever you throw your leg over a dirt bike, it just makes things a whole lot easier; because if you go out there with negativity, it won’t do you any good when you’re riding. So just always be confident in yourself and you will be good to go out there! And if you don’t do good at one race, don’t let that bring you down, ’cause just remember, there will always be other races.

What lessons have you learned about work ethic from your sport?

That you must have a lot of dedication and you have to work extremely hard to get to where you want to be in this sport. You have to give it your all whenever you’re racing or just out there practicing because in the end, it will all pay off!

How do you balance school and sports?

Well, I’m first going to start off by saying this, the rules in my house are that if you don’t get good grades in school, you can’t ride or race. So with me, since I am a senior now I get out of school at 12:00pm pretty much everyday; I come home do all of my homework and make time to go out and practice on weekends, since Saturday and Sunday are the only days that we can make a two hour drive out to the riding park where my brother and I can get some practice in on hills. On race weekends, if, I have homework I have to take it along with me and finish it in the toy hauler before I can go out and hang out with my friends or ride. For me though, it’s not as difficult as other athletes to balance school and sports since most of my races are on weekends.

My Fairy Agent

Did you ever want to shrink someone and carry him or her around on your shoulder all day? Like a fairy to help you make uber important decisions, keep you company, or just a bud to bounce things off of? Okay… maybe I’m kind of strange, but I've always wanted my own personal fairy.

And now I'm lucky enough to have one… A human sized one. Michelle Grajkowski of 3 Seas Literary Agency is my fairy agent.

Still Sore and an Interview

Two weeks ago, I was invited to play in my hometown's annual Thanksgiving alumni soccer game...

Here we are.. Representing Maple Shade High School Classes of 1990 - 2000 something, one coach, one son, and one cousin..

Something about strapping on my shin guards and hanging with teammates and friends.. I felt like I was a teen again. Uh.. I'm not. In fact, far from it. And I'm still sore. But, it was a blast and well worth the pain.

My favorite memory was finally learning my first unhooked trick, the Raley.

To be confident but not over confident. And to share the love of the sport. No one likes selfish people who want all the spotlight for themselves..

You must work very hard!! It’s important to have a good attitude on and off the water, and always try your very best.

It’s important to support each other, your teammates should always have your back!

I spend 6 months of the year on school and the other 6 months focusing on kiteboarding only. When I’m in school I work on snowboarding.

Who’s your fave athlete, both male and female?

Female would be Lisa Anderson, who is a legendary Pro surfer. She has been very inspirational to all women because of her hard work and determination. She proved to everyone women can do anything.

Male would be Jason Slezak, who is a Pro Kiteboarder. He has been in the industry since the beginning, winning hearts with his great attitude towards life and others, along with being a caring supportive friend.

I’m a fan of painting my nails. It makes me feel more girlie to have hot pink nails, versus chipped dirty nails from being in the water ☺

Happy December! I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season. I absolutely love this time of year. :)

The first Wednesday of the month means another edition of The Book Review Club hosted by Barrie Summy, author of the I So Don't Do Mysteries series. To celebrate the beginning of the winter sports season, I'm featuring P.V. Beck's basketball book, SWEET TURNAROUND J.

It took me forever to want to learn to snowboard so my favorite memory is when I was finally able to ride all over the mountain with my friends.

Respect gets Respect, not that I didn’t know that before but to see how frequently in lessons it is stressed that.

Hannah Teter/Dallas Friday are my favorite female athletes and Rusty Malinoski/Danny Kass are my favorite male athletes.

I am tomboy at heart, but I love to put on a dress and look like a girl whenever possible, and nothing beats a good manicure/pedicure to go with that.

Okay, in my defense, I live near Cape May about ninety miles south of Seaside Park and my hair is no longer big. I mean, it used to be, but that was a really long time ago. Fist pumps? Again, a long time ago. And yes, I love malls. But, seriously who doesn't?

What’s your fave sport? Drag Racing

How many years have you been playing your fave sport? 6 Years

What was your fave sporty moment or memory?

It seems like every year I get more memories to add into my fave list… so this is a tough question. One of my favorites was a race two years ago where my friends, Katherine, Nancy, and I decided to compete in a small trophy class race. There were about 30 cars in the class, and we three girls did our best to not have to race each other. One by one we took out the guys we raced, and in the quarter finals, we were still in. We each again took out the guys, and then met each other in the semi final round. Katherine and I ended up in the final round. She cut a better light, so I ended up taking runner-up that day. We shared so many laughs that it was really impossible to get stressed over the race – which is probably why we did so well. That was the most fun I have ever had during a race day.

What was the biggest lesson you’ve learned from playing your sport?

Winning is a combination of attitude, skill, and luck. All you can control is the attitude you have, and your prep for the race. If Bad Luck gets in the way of a win, don’t let it get you down. Just continue to do your best no matter what.

What lessons have you learned about work ethic from your sport?

Show up, prepared to work, and with a good attitude, no matter what else is going on in your life – and you will succeed.

What have you learned about teamwork?

The hardest thing is that it ISN’T all about you - it is about the team – and many times the spotlight will be on other team members. Love it and celebrate it when your teammates do well and you don’t. Be there for your teammates always, for the good and the bad. They are your family.

How do you balance school and sports?

I have a five way balance thing going – God, family, work, school, and drag racing. That is the order of priority that I have to keep them in. I tell you it can be tough! Drag racing is part of my life and who I am, but without the other parts - drag racing can’t exist.

List some awards or accolades you’ve received.

My absolute favorite accolade was King (ahem… Queen) of the Track in 2006 during an all-truck race. I was unbeatable that day!

Who’s your fave athlete, both male and female?

For male – John Force. He’s an NHRA pro driver that’s had some pretty tough spots over the past few years. He cares about everyone on his team (even the one’s that AREN’T related), he has a winning attitude, and he is just an inspiration to watch.

For female – Peggy Llewellyn. Another NHRA pro in the Pro Stock Motorcycles class. She is a treasure. She has a great personality on and off track, and tough competitive spirit. I have never seen her lose her cool – no matter what the circumstances. She is a great role model.

What’s the girliest thing you like to do? (Pretty Tough signature question)

I get together with my daughter-in-law, and some friends, and we either scrapbook, or make some crafty creations with stamps. To me that is WAY girlie… especially after being in the garage tearing an engine down the day before.

What was your fave sporty moment or memory?

I am blessed and grateful to say that I have a few very fave moments in Motorsport. I think the most fave moment would be the one in 2007 at the Vortex Super Rok Grand Final in Lonato, Italy, because I as an athlete performed my best and the team was top notch, from the engine engineer to the chassis engineer and the support was phenomenal. I had to learn the track really fast, as I never even laid eyes on that track before. I adapted to the grip level quite quickly as well, which I am very grateful for as many people struggled with it. I had a lot of confidence, I was solid as a rock, and no one could intimidate me. Everything came together in the end, we finished 5th in the world and we made history as I became the first female to finish on the podium. I was over the moon! I thank god for everything as his hand was over me.

List some of your best achievements to date:

2003 – Raced in 3 of the Florida, USA Rotax Max Junior Championship, won 2 rounds and finished 2nd in the third. Finished 4th in the South African Rotax Max Junior Championship.

2004 - Finished Runner Up (2nd) in the South African Rotax Max Challenge Championship, won the Rotax Max Challenge NRKC Championship in a South African designed and built Kart (Apex) & qualified to participate at the Rotax Max RM1 International Final at Lanzarote, Spain in 2005.

2005 - Made history and became the first female to make it through to the Final day out of 89 competitors of which only the top 34 qualify to the final round.

2007 - Finished 4th in the Final at Round 1 of the Rotax Euro DD2 Challenge in Salbris, France. Finished 8th in the South African Vortex Super Rok Championship, qualified for the Vortex Super Rok International Final in Lonato, Italy. Made history again as I became the first female to finish on the podium as I finished 5th out of 50 top class karters in the world. I got my National Colours for our outstanding performance.

2008 - Finished Runner Up (2) in the South African Vortex Super Rok Championship, won the Vortex Super Rok NRKC Championship and qualified to participate at the Vortex Super Rok International Final in Lonato, Italy. Finished 13th overall out of 66 competitors.

In a male dominated sport, how do you handle it and how do they handle it getting beaten by a girl?

I used to get pushed around when I first started racing until I was told to overtake left, right over or even underneath. The point was to get passed and not to take any nonsense from the anyone. Today other competitors know, if they push me, I push them back. They must not mess with me. Some boys/men can’t take it to get beaten by a girl, but some look at me as another competitor, which is cool.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from racing?

There are so many, which makes this sport a real life changing experience! I think the biggest one would be dedication. The preparation that goes into the engine and chassis before the race is so important as this is the starting ground to the weekend’s race. A lot of long hours are spent on getting this right. I try to train at least 4 days a week, mostly on core muscles. Studying of the Kart’s handling and engine performance never stops as every corner needs to be analyzed to get the best combination for a specific track.

What have you learned about teamwork?

Team work is what completes the racing driver I think. I think the most important people behind the driver are the Kart and Engine Engineer. The driver needs to work with the Kart and engine engineer in order to get the kart on pace. The people who help put the tent up and clean the kart and change tyres are also important as they make mine and my engineer’s work load a bit less and thus we can concentrate on out jobs. Team work is essential with the team mate as we follow each other to study who is quicker at what position on the track and we discuss the different set up we each have. The media person is one of the most important to work with as she/he markets me.

What drives you to compete?

I love the speed, the complexity of the set up, engine tuning and race strategy. I love competition and the more there is the more that is game on for me. Sometimes the butterflies get almost unbearable before some of the races as I get so exited to give it my all and try and win, but I would not change it for anything. It is living life to the full for me. To be able to stand on the podium at the end is the cherry on the cake.

What do you aspire to become?

My dream is to race a Formula 1 car. I love the speed; the technical complexity of setting up the car to the race strategy to doing what I do best and that is driving the car to its maximum potential and winning! It is the pinnacle of racing for me.

What tip would you like to give people out there?

Once you have found something that turns your tummy upside down, gives you the thrill of your life and you can’t stop thinking about it, hold on to it. Do not give up on your dream. There is a will, there is a way! God will have his hand over you. Trust and have faith in him. And remember, practice makes perfect. :)

Who’s your fave athlete, both male and female?

My favourite male athletes are Michael Schumacher and Lance Armstrong. My favourite female athletes are Danica Patrick, Venus and Serena Williams.

What’s the girliest thing you like to do? (Pretty Tough signature question)

I think the girliest thing I like to do would be getting all dressed up in a evening dress for an award dinner, looking glamorous.

Happy November! I hope everyone is enjoying gorgeous cool autumn weather and gearing up for the holiday season.

The first Wednesday of the month means another edition of The Book Review Club hosted by Barrie Summy, author of the I So Don't Do Mysteries series. Today, I'm featuring the sensational Suzanne Young, author of the THE NAUGHTY LIST (YA, 14 and up) series.

Young’s main character, Tessa, is absolutely adorable, extremely likable, and hilarious. I have no doubt THE NAUGHTY LIST will be climbing the best sellers lists this February, along with SOS’s popping up in high schools across the country.

Okay, I’ll stop bubbling all over this book. But, it’s seriously THAT good. Here’s the adorable Suzanne Young to fill you in on the rest.

1. I would have totally hired SOS (Society of Smitten Kittens) and saved myself a ton of heartbreak in high school. :) How did you come up with the idea for the SOS?

The original idea came from an unlikely place—Ninja Cheerleaders. And when the first line was, “My pom poms hit the wood floor with a double thwack,” I knew that I wasn’t going to write a serious book. First I considered them just handling high school “justice”, but I didn’t care enough. Stealing school supplies? Lame. But then I realized, what was the biggest deal when I was in high school??? Cheating boyfriend. Bam. SOS was born. lol

2. Tessa is adorable. I love her little sayings – Strawberry Smoothie, Oh Applesauce... Is she based on anyone you know?

Unfortunately not. I think I’d enjoy hanging out with Tessa though. She’d definitely cheer me up. And when I realized her perky perfectness, I thought to myself—no way she’d swear. And the more I wrote, the more silly her phrases became.

3. What is your writing schedule like? Do you write during the day, afternoon, or evening? Are you a panster or outliner?

My writing schedule totally varies. I’m an all or nothing type of person. I tend to write my books all at once or I sit and stare at the page. So usually when I write I have to take a couple of days near the end and go to a hotel for some isolation. I know. I’m weird. As far as outlining goes, I’m no good. I do write query letters before I start writing though to keep me on track.

4. When does THE NAUGHTY LIST drop? Can you tell us a little about the sequel – SO MANY BOYS?

The Naughty List will be released on February 4th, 2010 (yay!). The sequel SO MANY BOYS comes out June 4th, 2010 and follows the squad into their latest catastrophe. A copykitten.

5. If you could have dinner with any five people (dead or alive) who would you pick?

Oh, wow. Tough question. First, I’d love to see my grandmother again. She passed away a few years ago and I still miss her tremendously. Who could join us?? Hm… How about Zach Braff, James Dean, Kurt Cobain and maybe Meg Cabot.

A relay team is only as fast as it’s slowest swimmer

How do you balance school and sports?

School comes first and training fits in around classes. I also get up and going while most people are still sleeping. I tend to get more done before noon than some people do all day.

18^th in Shelby County High Schools for the 100-yard backstroke for the 2008-2009 season

What is your biggest goal?

I want to break the world record for a woman to swim the English Channel (the current record is 8 hours and 45 minutes) before I turn 21. Right now, I plan to make my attempt when I’m 20.

Today, I was going to blog about this little creature Kaci and I spotted during our Monday bay stroll...

My daughter was so excited to check out an actual pufferfish because she's Nemo obsessed and swore the little creature was this guy, Bloat from the Tank Gang...

But, then I was scrolling through the Cybil nominees and I spotted my little sporty book, CHANGE UP. I rubbed my eyes and it was still there. I pinched myself and it was still there. CHANGE UP is nominated for a 2009 CYBIL!! A CYBIL!!

Happy Teen Read Week!

I love teens. Obviously, I write for, coach, and teach them. But, there’s one special teen that I seriously could not live without. Sporty girl and bookaholic, Lauren. Lauren reads and critiques all my books for teen authenticity before I send them to my editor. She’s super honest and gives me valuable feedback. Thanks, Lauren!

I’ll confess I haven’t been reading much lately (unlike Stephanie Kuehnert – check out her book list here) except for my WIP, FULL COURT PRESS. However there is one book that’s calling me and after I send FCP to my amazing editor at Razorbill next week, I'm going to crack this baby open.

That sometimes it’s not how good you are its how bad you and your teammates want it.

That you only become good if you work hard. You’re not going to get any better by just sitting around.

What have you learned about teamwork?

That everyone on your team has to want to be a team you can’t just have some people wanting to be a team and other people not wanting to be a team, because it won’t work if its like that.

How do you balance school and sports?

It’s definitely hard, but I have a weekly scheduler that my dad and I sit down with at the beginning of each week and plan out the days I have work, the days I have softball practice/pitching lessons and the day I have to go to the gym. So keeping a schedule has definitely helped me a lot, so I’m able to see it visually.

It’s that time of year again. Time to get Pinked.

The amazing Alexandra, who lost her mother to breast cancer before she even graduated high school, will be walking the 3 Day, as she does every year, this weekend for Team Mary’s Angels. Alexandra is so inspiring, tirelessly raising money and awareness for the disease in honor of her mother. Good luck, Alexandra!

Catch any of the MLB playoffs? I’m loving the series this year. And not just because the Yankees swept the Twins (okay, yeah), but I’m crossing my fingers for a Yankees vs. Phillies World Series – a dream of mine since childhood. My brother is a HUGE Phillies fanatic, along with everyone else here in the Philadelphia area and my father, hubby, and I are HUGE Yankees fans. Fingers crossed for our dream series. Ron, you’re going down.

Happy October! I hope everyone is enjoying gorgeous cool autumn weather and gearing up for the holiday season.

The first Wednesday of the month means another edition of The Book Review Club hosted by Barrie Summy, author of the I So Don't Do Mysteries series. Today, I'm featuring the fabulous and super sporty, Christine A. Baker author of Why She Plays: The World of Women’s Basketball.

Five for Christine A. Baker

1. What made you want to sit down and write WHY SHE PLAYS?

I grew up playing basketball. I played competitive basketball in high school and in college. After college, I had the opportunity to play professionally in Israel but I turned it down. At the time, I was afraid I would never be good or succeed at anything else other than basketball, and I wanted to start my career. Several years later, I had a successful career in communications, but my life felt empty. I desperately missed being on the basketball court, and being around the game I loved so much. Add to all of this that one of my life goals was always to write a book. So, I decided to put the two together and write Why She Plays.

2. Tell us a little bit about your basketball career.

I started playing basketball at a very young age, and at the time, there were no girls' leagues. So I played with the boys. I played high school varsity for four years at Mercy High School in Middletown, CT and received many conference honors while in HS. I played four years at Mount Saint Mary College, in Newburgh, NY (NCAA Division III), where I was co-captain and team MVP for three of my four seasons. I broke the single season scoring record (both men and women) with 538 points, still holdthe single game scoring record (both men and women) with 38 points, broke the all-time leading scoring record with 1,523 points, and received over 15 different accolades in my senior year alone.

3. What is your advice to a teen who has athletic ability and heart, but maybe isn’t the most talented player on the court?

Work hard. It sounds simple, but it is not. By working hard, I mean the following: get stronger. Get in the weight room and develop your core strength. Study the game. Watch the WNBA, watch NCAA men or women. Be a student of the game. Watch it being played. Get in the gym and work hard every moment you are on the court. Play with boys, with girls, with anyone who wants to play. Take losses hard. Losses are lessons. They teach us where we have to improve. All players lose games. Great players learn from those losses and do the work to improve.

4. Name your favorite fiction book(s)? Why do you like this book(s)?

I'm an avid reader so this is a hard question to answer! The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein because I love animals and I thought the perspective of the dog was amazing. I also love the English Patient by Michael Ondaatje because that story was so visual and it is one of the most beautiful love stories I have ever read. Finally, I'd have to say Beloved by Toni Morrison because it forced me to open my eyes and see the horrors of slavery in an extraordinarily personal and real level.

5. If you could have dinner with anyone (living or dead) who would it be and why?

Wow. I have so many! Larry Bird- he was my absolute favorite player growing up and that would be such an honor for me. Oprah because, well, she's Oprah! Finally, the comedian Robin Williams. How much fun would dinner with Robin be?

Enjoying the game with my teammates and winning tournaments.

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from playing your sport?

When you get older, you have to really be dedicated to the sport, because everyone around you is older and stronger, which means you have to become a better player, and become a stronger person physically and mentally.

What lessons have you learned about work ethic from your sport?

I have learned that you really have to work hard to become better at the sport and always practice, but you also have to study hard, to keep up your grades in school.

What have you learned about teamwork?

That to win and to be a good team, you all have to work together and help each other out, because if one person is down on the team, everyone has to help pick her up, no matter the score, or importance of the game. We have to work together as “one.”

How do you balance school and sports?

By getting as much homework done during a free period at school that I can, so I have less homework when I get home, and can then concentrate on Softball Practice with my team.

List some awards or accolades you’ve received.

I have received MVP awards at tournaments and tournament trophies with my team. In school I have received high honors and honor roll.

Who’s your fave athlete, both male and female?

Philadelphia Phillies team and Jennie Finch

What’s the girliest thing you like to do? (Pretty Tough signature question)

What’s your fave thing about the game when you pitch?

When I pitch I love the pressure that is put on you. Nothing rattles me when I am on the mound, I just pitch. There could be bases loaded, two outs, tie game, and I don’t get rattled. That’s how I got my nickname “Game Face.”

Well I got my first board around 8 years old. So about 9 years.

My favorite memory would have to be when my dad convinced me to do my first contest. I was so terrified, but I stuck with it and did my thing. I realized how much fun they are and I have been entering as many come my way!

What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned from playing your sport?

My biggest lesson I have learned through skateboarding is that I can skateboard just as good as the guys. Also not to be intimidated by the guys.

What have you learned about work ethic from playing sports?

You have to work hard in order to succeed in life.

How do you balance school and sports?

It’s hard because all I want to do is skate every second I have!

I usually take care of my schoolwork and then go skate with my friends. Most of the contests I enter are in the summer time so I don’t have to miss school.

Who’s your fave athlete, both male and female?

I have so many fave athletes. Mike Vallely would have to be my fave male athlete. He’s so inspirational and I like how he has his own style of skating. My fave female skater would have to be Elissa Steamer. She is such a sick street skater.

The girliest thing I like to do is prob get new skate clothes and shoes.

How many years have you been playing your fave sport?

I am going on my 5^th year.

What was your fave sporty moment or memory?

My team was in a championship game and we were only winning by a couple of runs. This girl comes up and has a huge hit to right field (where I was playing). I ran over and sort of dove for the ball and caught it! Drop stepping really game in handy!

What was the biggest lesson you’ve learned from playing your sport?

That there definitely is no “I” in team, everyone has to work as one. If one person is playing selfishly than they could lose the game for you.

What lessons have you learned about work ethic from your sport?

That in whatever sport you play, you have a responsibility on the team. You have to show up for practice because if you don’t, you will not play in the game. The team needs everyone to make a perfect one.

What have you learned about teamwork?

Everyone has to work together and to the highest potential to make everyone play their best game!

How do you balance school and sports?

My mom says that if I do not finish my homework I cannot go to practice until it is done. I try to finish all of my homework in o.p. (opportunity period) on days that I have practice.

List some awards or accolades you’ve received.

I have won championship medals, M.V.P. medals, a world language certificate for Spanish, High Honor Roll, and Honor Roll.

Who’s your fave athlete, both male and female?

My favorite female athletes are…Jennie Finch, Caitlin Lowe, and Meghan Gibson. My favorite male athlete is Thurmon Munson.

What’s the girliest thing you like to do? (Pretty Tough signature question) J

I love to go shopping, do hair and make-up, and I love going to dances and dancing!

Mental Toughness: Jeter Style

As many of you know, I’m a HUGE Derek Jeter fan…. And yes, I’m obsessed with his breath taking good looks and the way he fits into a Yankees uniform, but what really intrigues me about this amazing athletic specimen is his ability to do his job well day in and day out.

Like for instance…

Jeter consistently gives 100%.

Jeter never complains and his positive aura is infectious.

Jeter works hard all-year long no matter how many records he breaks or awards he wins.

I find athletes very intriguing (obviously) because to be the best, break records, and compete at the highest level, professional athletes must have an insane mental toughness, focus, and drive. Often, I find myself wanting to dive into their brains to find out how they do it.

Do you think authors need to be mentally tough? And whom do you admire?

Position: I’m a pitcher and short stop for my softball team, and I protect the net as a back for my field hockey team.

How many years have you been playing your fave sport?

I started playing softball on a team 10 years ago, but I first picked up a ball and bat much earlier than that!

What was your fave sporty moment?

My favorite sporty moment definitely wasn’t my fave when it happened, and it actually didn’t even happen while I was playing! I injured my ankle and had to have several surgeries along with months of casts, crutches, and doctor appointments. After my first surgery I went to watch a softball tournament and every single one of my teammates either came up to me before or after the game telling me about games I missed or informing me that my nickname was about to change to something that related to being injured. Even though I couldn’t be on the field, it was great to feel the sense of being part of a team and knowing I had a group of friends to put a smile on my face.

What was the biggest lesson you’ve learned from playing your sport?

The importance of teamwork and support of one another! The way you treat your teammates and how well you work together really affects the way you play and your relationship with one another. No matter how big of an error someone may make or how many times someone strikes out, you have to keep motivating your teammates and refrain from getting frustrated or annoyed. By caring for only yourself and not working well with the others on your team you’re only hurting yourself in the long run and meanwhile you are also hurting your team.

What lessons have you learned about work ethic?

By playing sports I have learned how important it is to give 100% in everything I do along with responsibility. It’s not fair to your team if you decide not to give it your all because you stayed up late and you’re tired or something along those lines. You have to learn to be responsible enough to do what is best for yourself while keeping your team’s best interest in mind.

What have you learned about teamwork?

Teamwork is key! If you and your teammates don’t act as a team, you’re not going to play as a team. You should be a personal cheerleader to every single one of your teammates whether you’re best friends with them or not. Rather than being angry and aggravated when someone makes a mistake, you should brush it off and try to keep the other person from getting frustrated. It doesn’t matter how well you play yourself if your team doesn’t play well together.

How do you balance school and sports?

School has always been very high on my priority list, especially after my injury this year. I’m in honors classes at my high school which require a lot of hard work and very little time for sports and fun, and there have been quite a few times where I have stayed up extremely late to finish up a project or homework that should have been done well in advance. I try to make deadlines for myself to force myself to get my work done so I’m not scrambling at the last minute. I also try to get ahead of school work on days I don’t have practice or games. The time management skills that I’ve learned over the years from sports helped me a lot this year when I had to make up the work I missed when I had my surgery.

Who’s your fave athlete, both male and female?

Jennie Finch and Jamie Moyer! :)

What’s the girliest thing you like to do?

I love painting my nails and reading teen Chick Lit!

Sensational Stone Harbor Signing

Last Saturday night, I had the pleasure of signing books alongside two amazing authors, Nancy Viau, author of Samantha Hansen Has Rocks in Her Head, and Cyn Balog, new mom and author of Fairy Tale, at our Jersey Girl book signing in Stone Harbor, New Jersey.

What a blast. Cyn and Nancy are hilarious and full of a ton of writing insight. We laughed and chatted and laughed some more. In fact, last week was the best week of the entire summer. After the amazing signing, my mom, dad, brother, and his family arrived and we ate at Menz's (my fave Jersey Shore restaurant), spent some time on the beach, hit the water park, and we took Kaci to her first circus. :) After way too many sad times over the past year, this summer was full of exciting news and happy times with family and friends. Life is Good.

Back from Vaca with an August Book Review Club

Happy August! I hope you are having a fantastic summer. :) The first Wednesday of the month means another edition of The Book Review Club hosted by Barrie Summy, author of I So Don't Do Mysteries. Today, I'm featuring the fabulous and new mommy, Cyn Balog's FAIRY TALE.

I'm going to be honest and I don't usually share this with ANYONE - mainly because I don't want my writer and reader buds to throw things at me. I'm not a huge fan of fantasy because most of the time I just don't 'get it' (it meaning the fantasy). BUT, I do enjoy a good story and Cyn Balog's debut, FAIRY TALE is amazing. In fact, it's so good, I actually contemplated picking up a few fantasies at Borders last weekend. :)

I'll let Cyn tell you about FAIRY TALE..

1. After reading FAIRY TALE, I was left with a lot of potential lessons about life – letting loved ones go, fate, sacrifice and selflessness, teenage boyfriend/girlfriend relationships, etc... What is the most important one you tried to portray?

Mostly, I wanted to portray how even things we're 100% sure about might not happen... even when you're a psychic and have the most perfect relationship ever, that by no means guarantees the future!

2. Loved your characters, Cam, Morgan, Scab, Eden, and Pip. Any muses?? :)

Not so much-- Cam is my popular dream guy, the guy most girls would want, and Pip is the flip side, the gangly, humble, sensitive guy... the type of guy girls SAY they want! Morgan is who I would probably be if I had the ability to see the future... she is snarky and sometimes mean, but it's a thin disguise because she's really not that self-confident-- she knows all of her popularity is tied up in her gift and her boyfriend... so when both of those start to crumble, her insecurity begins to show.

3. Why did you choose to write about fairies? Are you a fairy fan?

Not a huge fairy fan. I just wanted to write a paranormal with a love triangle, and I thought it would be very interesting to have a GUY fairy, since most books out there were about girls learning they were fairy princesses.

4. Your description is remarkable and I commend the way you were able to make the story so real and believable. Any tips for writing such rich description? Do you write description in your first draft or add it later?

I write really lean at first; my first drafts are usually like 45,000 words. Then I go back and embellish. I really have no idea how people can write 100k-word books, because I have never been able to do that. I always seem to want to rush rush rush through all the action, so I leave description and characterization very sparse and always have to throw it in there in the next draft. Plus, I guess I don't think very descriptively... it always takes me longer to come up with that imagery.

5. Tell us about your next book.. I can’t wait! :)

Sleepless, about a Sandman who falls in love with a mortal girl whose sleep he controls, is due out in 2010! It's another YA geared toward the 12-14 age group and I just turned in revisions for it... so I am excited to go through the whole process again with another book!

Teen Writers Workshop and More :)

Happy Fourth of July! Hope everyone had a great long weekend! :)

As you know because I babble about it constantly, I love summer...

One of the many reasons summer rocks is I'm lucky enough to facilitate a Teen Writer's Workshop with Justin the Librarian at the Cape May County Library every year. We meet on Tuesdays and this year, Justin's publishing the anthology of our short stories and the book will appear in all the libraries across Cape May County. :) Tomorrow we're bringing in our

fave books (I'm looking forward to some new reads) to study what the best authors do right. :)

Besides the Teen Writer's Workshop, I'm also volunteering to teach creative writing at a Summer College for students in grades 5-8 in Atlantic City starting today. :) Then, off to summer teaching at Atlantic Cape Community College.

Speaking of teaching.. I'm teaching writing at Rowan University this fall!

Yay!!! I'm so excited to join the Rowan University writing community. Not only as a teacher, but as a student. I'm taking a class a semester to earn my Masters of Arts degree in Writing. :) :) :) It's been a looonnnggg time since I've been on the other side of the desk.

Rowan and I go way back. It's where I met my hubby. Except, we both weren't attending the college at the time. And we met off campus.. And we knew each other from high school.. Anyway, it's a long story. :)

Last, but certainly not least, stay tuned for a few exciting things..

Like, a teen and author call for submissions that's covered in pink. :)

Plus, Pretty Tough Tuesdays are back next week. Kudos to the L.A. Sparks' Candace Parker who returned to basketball 58 days after giving birth. Impressive.

I was thrilled to open up my inbox on Friday and find a link to this review of CHANGE UP..

The second book by Keri Mikulski is a strong, fun and real good new YA novel. In a sea of dark Ya novels that seems to be the trend now, Keri Mikulski has launched a fresh read, that is, in my opinion, THE book pick of this summer. It is really good. Screwball, the first book, was great. And with Change Up, Keri Mikulski has reached a new book peak. Even if you are not that into sports, you will love this new sunny novel. And for the second time, Keri Mikulski's book is rated 5 stars! Make sure you got this book in your beach bag!

Right now, I'm in between college teaching assignments, CHANGE UP promotion, finishing up revisions on a new sporty novel and spending some much needed down time with the family.

Here's what we've been doing during our down time..

1. Quiet time on the beach before the vacationers roll down

2. Walking and riding bikes on the semi-deserted boardwalk

3. Playing tons of basketball and soccer at the local field

4. Hanging out with visiting family and friends - love summer!

5. Looking up stuff that washed up on the bay - like this shark and the biggest sea turtle ever (didn't have my camera)..

What do you like to do during your down time?

Cute Kaci Moment: Kaci just ran into my office jumping up and down, smiling, and screaming.. "Mommy, ice comes from water. Ice comes from water. I love ice and I love water." :) Gotta love three.

Writing Together

Darcy and I met more than ten years ago when we each signed up for a free online writing class and then joined an internet writing community. We became fans of each other’s work, then critique partners, then friends. And then, through a few twists of fate, we became co-authors.

A few weeks ago, Darcy wrote down a few of the guidelines that helped us through the process of writing together. Today, I add my take as well--because this is the way we work. She sends me something, I tweak it, and then send it back (and vice versa).

Darcy says: Charity says on writing together:

Darcy says: Choose a partner that you genuinely admire, respect…and like. You will be spending a lot of time with your co-author.

Charity says: A word of caution: someone can be a great writer and not-such-a-great online communicator. We had the advantage of many years of online communicating already behind us before we started working together.

Darcy says: Stash your ego in the closet for the duration of the project. It isn’t about you and it isn’t about her (or him). It’s about the book.

Charity says: So true. I don’t have much to add to this one except stashing your ego in the closet is all around good advice for writing and publishing.

Darcy says: Examine your own strengths and weaknesses and understand your role in the project. Charity was the chief engineer of our novel due to her amazing plotting abilities. I was the “sparkly eyeliner applier” due to my generally goofy nature. The book needed both of us.

Charity says: We also found that when one of us didn’t understand something in one of our revision letters, the other did. And when we both didn’t understand, we could puzzle it out together.

Darcy says: Communicate, communicate, communicate. Don’t let trouble fester. If you are frustrated by some aspect of the story or the process, talk it out. Chances are, if you’re feeling uncomfortable, your partner is too—and that’s counterproductive to good writing.

Charity says: Also, if you’re frustrated with a scene, there’s nothing like handing it off to your writing partner to “fix.” But our best ideas came when we were working together, brainstorming via IM. What seemed insurmountable worked itself out when we worked together.

Darcy says: Enjoy the process! Writing a novel together is a unique and amazing experience. Have fun with it!

Charity says: And when you have something to celebrate, you get twice the excitement and joy.

My First Time

Last night, I had the pleasure of meeting fellow Jersey girl and the ultra amazing author of the best selling Jessica Darling series, Megan McCafferty.

Megan was the first author who inspired me to write novels. After I devoured and loved every page of SLOPPY FIRSTS three years ago, I emailed her and she shot a personal email back filled with tons of advice. We've kept in contact since then and I continue to feel inspired every time I pick up one of her books. Megan's writing is fearless, honest, and unique and she consistently challenges herself as an author.

When I walked into Barnes and Nobles last night, my expectations were high since this paragraph from Megan's second novel, SECOND HELPINGS, caused me to laugh out loud for the first time while reading...

"I imagine Manda trying on her Prom Queen tiara when she's thirty, Sara wanting to relive the days when her brainless scoop was a commodity, and Scotty, thick with frat fat, unable to run to the closest keg without getting winded, crying along with "Glory Days" on the radio because what Springsteen is singing is so true, so true." (page 340)

Megan exceeded all expectations. Not only was she as hilarious in person as she is on the pages, she was also super nice. Thanks, Megan for your advice, guidance, and for my new mantra - Keep writing because you HAVE to.

June Book Review Club

Happy June everyone! Summer is here and I'm loving it. Eighty degrees, sunny, and time to relax on the beach with an amazing book (actually, I used to - now, I happily make sand castles, dig up crabs, play soccer, collect seashells, and hang out in the frigid water). :)

The first Wednesday of the month means another edition of The Book Review Club hosted by Barrie Summy, author of I So Don't Do Mysteries. Today, I'm featuring one of the ten novels chosen for my annual South Jersey Mom magazine Chick Lit Pick's Beach Reads column.

The Year of the Fog

During a shoreline stroll, Abby Mason stops for a split second to snap a picture of a baby seal and when she looks up, her soon to be stepdaugther, Emma, is gone. Follow Abby and her family as they enter the tormenting world of searching for a missing child. Get swept away by this edge- of-your-seat emotional thriller.

Every parents worst nightmare is losing a child. Although THE YEAR OF THE FOG is emotionally tough to read at times, the flashback technique used by Richmond makes the novel impossible to put down. I'm recommending this month's book to anyone who has children or share the fear of losing someone. :)

First CHANGE UP Reader Reaction and Revision Lessons

I'm in the middle of watching some exciting World Series softball right now on ESPN2. Wow, Florida just hit a walk off grand slam to send the Gators to their first final. Great stuff.

The fabulous Lauren, a fan of the SCREWBALL series and local high school and ASA softball player, contacted me via MySpace a few months ago to tell me how much she loved SCREWBALL. I love, love, love hearing from readers and Lauren absolutely made my day. A few honest teens help me to authenticate plot, character, and dialogue and Lauren recently volunteered to be part of the crew. After I received my ARCs last Friday, I immediately sent a copy of CHANGE UP Lauren's way to thank her for her help with SCREWBALL 3 and the prequel.

Here's what she said:

I got CHANGE UP in the mail today! I got home at like 1 and could not stop reading it! I didn't put it down until I finished five minutes ago. I haven't read a book this great in so long. Ashley never failed to surprise me! (I can't post the rest because it's full of spoilers. :))

Recent Revision Lessons:

1. Grab is my fave word. Recently, I used the word 'grab' 127 times in a 300 page manuscript. That's almost once every two pages. Yikes. Nevertheless, if anyone needs help with using another word besides grab, feel free to email me, since I spent last weekend coming up with one hundred ways to describe scenes without using the word, grab. :)

2. I also tend to overuse the word 'seriously'. This particular word I only used 54 times, but sometimes, I used it twice on one page. Then, I realized I overuse this word in real life too. Seriously. :)

Who am I routing for? Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and/or Michigan - Go East! Until a few years ago, the south and west completely dominated college softball. Since I'm a Jersey girl, I'm cheering for the eastern teams, hoping Florida pulls it off. However, I'm also a huge Coach Candrea fan (I had the pleasure of interviewing him last year and he's amazing) so I'm throwing in one cheer for Arizona.

ARCs Have Arrived!!

Happy Memorial Day!! And thanks to all the men and women out there who risk their lives everyday to keep us safe and serve our country.

CHANGE UP has landed! After Kaci and I arrived home after a trip to the beach, a huge cardboard box was waiting patiently for me on the porch filled with ten ARC copies of CHANGE UP!! :) (My former writing instructor would cringe witnessing all these exclamation points, but I'm soooo excited!!! Sorry, Kristin!!)

I took CHANGE UP with me everywhere this weekend - to the beach, the boardwalk, my parent's house, the park, the Olive Garden, and I gave one to my ninety two year old ailing grandmother. My always honest first reader, Emily (Kaci's babysitter) was the first to receive a copy. She called me two days later to tell me she loved it! In fact, she said she couldn't put it down. Yay!

Did anyone watch the ONE TREE HILL finale last night?

Spoiler Alert:

I sat on the edge of my seat for one straight hour waiting for something to happen to Lucas and Peyton after reports were confirmed by the network that both were leaving the show. Nothing happened. Nada. No signature OTH drama at all. In fact, the season finale ended happy with dreams coming true and Lucas and Peyton driving into the sunset with their new baby. Okay, I should be elated and it was a nice ending, but it was the total opposite of what I was expecting. What the? Argh.. :)

Remembering Amy

Did you ever meet an angel?

I was lucky enough to work closely with one two years ago before I left my seventh grade teaching job. Amy was a walking Barbie doll. Seriously. She was absolutely gorgeous both inside and out.

We met after my principal asked me to mentor Amy during her first year of teaching. Amy and I shared a fun year together talking endlessly about teaching, friends, family, writing, my move, celebrities, workouts, books, and Amy's upcoming wedding. Not only was Amy easy to work with and an amazing, caring teacher, she was also a softball coach, so excited to snag a middle school position this spring. We clicked instantly and became good friends.

Amy was killed in an automobile accident on April 8th, 2009 on her way to work.

Although DeMasi Middle School lost a wonderful teacher and coach on that horrendous day, heaven welcomed a beautiful angel. I was blessed to share so much time with you, Amy, on your short visit here on Earth. I miss you.

If You Let Me Play

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there! Hope you had a great day. Kaci surprised me with a giant heart necklace and a matching pink heart balloon she picked out all by herself. :) I'm loving three.

Speaking of moms, did anyone participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure? My mom and I decided, after watching the event on television yesterday, we are definitely participating next year. Did I ever mention how amazing and strong my mother is? Her strength this past year was unbelievable and super inspiring. Happy Mothers Day, Mom.

Work is picking up and exciting. I should have my first ARC of CHANGE UP in my hand by the end of the month. This morning I finished up a proposal and sent it to my agent for another sporty series I'm working on with a brand. :) Right now, I'm brainstorming the SCREWBALL prequel, along with writing SCREWBALL 3 (untitled).

With the release of CHANGE UP days away, I've been thinking about why I write sporty. Besides the fact that I love sports and yearned to read a book with a sporty protagonist when I was a tween, I think one of my favorite NIKE commercials of all time sums it up. :)

I love summer. In fact, it's my absolute favorite season. Our barren, ghost resort town wakes up, the rides light up, the boardwalk fills with tourists, and the beaches are beautified. But, best of all, my extended family visits to vacation and we spend tons of fun summer time together. :) Love it.

I also love a good beach read. Broken Spell

A few posts ago, I blogged about a witch spell.. Well, it got worse. Way worse and I ate a lot of Cadbury Creme Eggs. But, the spell has lifted. I can actually feel it. The horrific news ship has sailed. Life is good.

And these are a few reasons why..

1. Reese Witherspoon is set to star in a major motion picture and she plays a pro-fastpitch player. A sporty softball movie. Yay!!! Thank you, Reese!! :)

2. The fabulous and fellow Jeter fanatic, Dru, sent me these amazing pics from Yankee Stadium. Yummy.. Thanks, Dru!

3. Temps reached ninety degrees three days in a row here at the Jersey shore. Our first 2009 official heat wave. I spent three days playing with Kaci and my hubby on the deserted beach. Total bliss.

Okay, back to writing. I'm in the midst of an upper YA/flashback novel. This one is pushing me to my limits, but at the same time I can't put the manuscript down or stop thinking about it.

Did anyone ever attempt a novel filled with flashbacks? Any reading recommendations with rotating past and present chapters? What do you think of books that flash from the present to the past? And why is my blog font playing strange tricks on me? :)
